URL with or without www?
Topic 1 URL with or without www? I will talk about a term that is buzzing around the internet and we will make a setting in WordPress and go tell Google. But, the main thing is you need to decide: do you want your URL (web address) to have www in the address?
URL . . . and What is Canonical?
The word “Canonical” is in different blogging articles on the internet. What is it? It simply means there are several URL choices for the same website. Google’s process of choosing the preferred one for its rankings is called Canonicalization. Here are a couple main examples:
But, technically, even though you may not have thought about it, there is more than one URL for your website.
First step for URL
Make a clear decision which URL you want as preferred for Google’s ranking and indexing. Once you decide, do the following steps to make that setting in WordPress. We looked at WordPress settings. We will now look more:
- Left side of screen, click Settings General
- WordPress Address (URL): type the URL with or without the www.
- I chose without. So my WordPress Address (URL) is: http://daily4technology.xyz
When someone types in http://www.daily4technology.xyz, they will be permanently ”redirected” to the preferred canonical URL of http://daily4technology.xyz. P.S. this is called a “301 redirect”.
Now, let’s tell Google our choice for the preferred URL
Remember back in we set up Google Webmaster. We are going back there now to tell Google which URL we chose for the preferred canonical URL.
- Go to http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools.
- Sign in using your Google user name (Google e-mail) and password.
- You should see the name of your website that you already set up.
- Add the other website just like you did.
- You should now see both websites. For me, I see:
- Now, click one of the websites.
- Left side of screen, click Configuration Settings.
- Next to Preferred Domain: click which one you want preferred.
- I clicked
- Now, go back to the Webmaster home page by clicking Webmaster Tool in the top left part of the screen.
- Click the other website name and do the same process.
In future blogs we will get the WordPress SEO Plugin and that takes care of behind the scenes canonicalization.
