 What is SEO? We are gong to start from the beginning.



What is SEO in non-techy words?


When you use a search engine, you type in a word or phrase and then you receive pages of results.  There are, of course, a variety of  search engines out there that you could use (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.), but, Google is the most popular.  Sometimes, I don’t even say I “used a search engine”, I just say I “Googled”.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.  Hmm.  This is what it means: we want our site to be recognized by the search engines.  We are asking: how do we get our website on a results page, and how do we get it closer to the top of the results list?  There is no perfect answer, but we need to get started on our journey to work at “optimizing” our site. We are yelling to Google (and other search engines), recognize us so we can get traffic.  That is SEO is all about!

What is SEO? Here are some terms to help you



  • KeyWord. This is the word people type in as they search.

    • We are going to pick a keyword. Stay with me in this SEO series because we will talk how to research and pick a keyword.

    • We will then make sure that we fit the key word in to various places on our post.

    • P.S. Key word phrases, also called Long tail keywords are 3+ words. So you can use a keyword or a long tail keyword.



  • Headings H1, H2, etc.  When you write a post in Genesis Prose, the title of your blog is coded with the strongest heading called a H1. You should only have one H1 per post, so you are done with H1 tags.

    • You can then have headings throughout your post.

    • You will be choosing H2 or H3 etc.

    • How to make headings when writing a post in WordPress:

      • Highlight the words you want for a heading. Example: my heading is “What is SEO? Here are some terms to help you”

      • The first icon on the second row says the word format or paragraph.  Click on the down arrow and choose, for example, Heading 2.



    • Important note: this is not just formatting, this is codes to help with SEO.
